Growing up seeing and dancing on the stage, Maki Kawakita’s work has been inspired by Kabuki (Japanese traditional opera) theatre aesthetics, possesses it’s striking color and/or contrast, dynamic composition and the dramatic stories within the imagery. Kawakita refers to her art as “Kabuki Pop”. It’s what happens, she says, when traditional Japanese art collides with Western pop culture, forming a rich stew of styles and themes.
