Growing up seeing and dancing on the stage, Maki Kawakita’s work has been inspired by Kabuki (Japanese traditional opera) theatre aesthetics, possesses it’s striking color and/or contrast, dynamic composition and the dramatic stories within the imagery. Kawakita refers to her art as “Kabuki Pop”. It’s what happens, she says, when traditional Japanese art collides with Western pop culture, forming a rich stew of styles and themes. Continue reading »

A timeless softness fills those young women portraits a bit out of focus, in homes with rich colors, overburden by the tapestries omnipresence, where light itself becomes gluey in an almost palpable breathlessness, and we might better understand that weariness that seems to drive them, a form of boredom like set in a waiting stase, plunged in greenish tints like those we could find at the bottom of ponds, a liquid atmosphere dragging us along in its wake, where everything is laying down when life settles.
Photographer: Aneta Bartos. Continue reading »

Tom Hines

Tom Hines was born and raised in Brandon, Mississippi. In an interview by Julia Vangsnes, he said fashion “must be the best thing in the world…I want it to be like the workings of the mind, different modules working, shifting, competing and harmonizing. I want to be able to jump around in motive, to leap from mode to mode. I want to do dreams, colors, myths, textures, philosophies, stories, critiques, high ideas, low ideas, however I want, the best way it feels best, or the best way I deduce it is best… Fashion is abstract.” Continue reading »

Dripping color

LucyandBart is a collaboration between Lucy McRae and Bart Hess from The Netherlands described as an instinctual stalking of fashion, architecture, performance and the body. They share a fascination with genetic manipulation and beauty expression. Unconsciously their work touches upon these themes, however it is not their intention to communicate this. They work in a primitive and limitless way creating future human shapes, blindly discovering low – tech prosthetic ways for human enhancement. Continue reading »
